You can get lucky (or shop smart!) and find a situation where you can earn it back very quickly just by swapping around ads. For example, with Adsense, a site can go from less than 1% CTR with the ads in the right menu or just a banner ad or some such to 5-10% CTR by placing the ads right in the content. That'll make a huge difference in earnings. You can definitely make your money back more quickly, usually with a mix of adding new content, building more traffic, and tweaking the monetization.
